Director of Communications & Marketing
Annie has over 17 years of experience in environmental communications and marketing. She currently serves as Director of Communications and Marketing at Strategic Ocean Solutions, where she leads the development of comprehensive environmental marketing strategies and public relations campaigns for clients in the non-profit, government, scientific and private sectors. Annie specializes in media relations, ocean conservation messaging and brand development.
In 2013, Annie led the overall brand development for OUR FLORIDA REEFS, a community-planning project for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. As part of this project, she developed a comprehensive branding strategy from name development and visual concept, to overall environmental messaging.
She has managed communications and marketing initiatives for two of the world’s leading scientific research institutions – Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. While at Scripps, she co-managed the communications campaign for the highly publicized Seaplex voyage, a three-week scientific expedition to study marine debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Annie has established the reputation as a go-to source for journalists seeking environmental sources. She has secured feature stories for her clients in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, National Geographic Magazine and ABC’s World News Tonight, in addition to many other media outlets. She has worked with documentary filmmakers and TV production crews for National Geographic Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, among many others. Her clients are frequently quoted in the media during emerging news stories related to marine science and conservation.
From 2008 – 2010, Annie led the media campaign for the California Marine Life Protection Act Initiative to support the implementation of the world’s first coastal network of marine protected areas, located along the state’s 1,100-mile coastline.
She holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in marine biology from the University of Miami and dual master’s certificates in ocean policy and natural resource management from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is a member of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and a PADI Advanced Open Water diver. Annie has taught a graduate-level course in science communications at the University of Miami as well as science communications workshops throughout the United States.
